Preventive Care

Treat early decay before it becomes a cavity

Most people think of cavities as a yes-or-no question. In reality, tooth decay is a process, and it has an early stage that sits in between. At that stage, minerals are being lost from beneath the enamel surface, but the surface hasn’t broken down into a hole. At Lansdowne Dental Care, we can treat many of these early spots with peptide therapy, a drill-free, needle-free treatment that helps strengthen enamel from within and helps stop early decay from progressing.

This is different from a fluoride treatment. Fluoride mainly protects the outer surface of the tooth and helps prevent new decay. Peptide therapy is designed to work deeper, inside an early lesion that has already formed. It’s a treatment for early decay that has already started, not a coating for healthy teeth.

What is early decay?

Early decay often shows up as a chalky white spot on a tooth, or as a small shadow between teeth on an X-ray. It usually doesn’t hurt, which is why it’s easy to miss. For years, dentists had two options for these spots: watch them and hope they don’t get worse, or drill and fill once they do. Peptide therapy adds a third option. We can treat the spot now, while the enamel surface is still intact and no drilling is needed.

How peptide therapy works

We use a clear, tasteless liquid applied directly to the early lesion. Its active ingredient is a self-assembling peptide designed to mimic the proteins that guide enamel formation. Once applied, it soaks into the weakened area beneath the surface and forms a microscopic framework, a bit like scaffolding. That framework attracts calcium and phosphate that are naturally present in your saliva, which helps rebuild mineral within the weak spot over the following weeks and months. The current formula also contains a small amount of fluoride.

Research on this technology is promising. A 2023 review in the Journal of the American Dental Association concluded that the earlier formula is likely effective at stopping early lesions from progressing, while noting that longer studies are needed. A 2024 randomized clinical trial found that teeth treated with the current formula were less likely to see decay progress over six months than teeth treated with fluoride varnish. Results vary from tooth to tooth, so we monitor each treated area over time.

Who may benefit from peptide therapy?

Peptide therapy may be a good fit if you have:

  • White spots or early decay that hasn’t become a cavity yet
  • White spots around braces or aligner attachments, during or after orthodontic treatment
  • A “watch spot” your dentist has been keeping an eye on
  • A higher risk of cavities, such as dry mouth, mouth breathing, frequent snacking or a history of decay

It can be used for both children and adults under a dentist’s supervision. If you’re wondering whether it’s right for your child, ask us at your next visit.

Peptide therapy isn’t the right choice for every tooth. Once decay has broken through the enamel into the deeper layer of the tooth, or the area has become soft, a traditional filling is usually needed. Your dentist will tell you which stage you’re at and talk through your options.

Step by Step

What to expect

1

Finding it

Early decay is usually spotted during a routine exam, using intraoral photos and X-rays when needed. We’ll show you what we see, so you understand the spot too.

2

Confirming it

Your dentist confirms that the lesion is early and that the enamel surface is still intact.

3

Talking it through

We’ll go over your options openly, which may include monitoring the spot, fluoride, peptide therapy or a filling if the decay is more advanced.

4

Treatment

The tooth is cleaned and gently prepared, then the peptide liquid is applied. There’s no drilling and no needles, and it takes just a few minutes per tooth. It can often be done during a regular cleaning visit.

5

Aftercare

You’ll avoid eating, drinking or rinsing for about 30 minutes, then brush and floss as usual.

6

Follow-up

We’ll check the treated area at future visits and compare photos over time.

The repair happens gradually. Changes may not be visible on an X-ray right away, and success is measured by the spot staying stable or improving. White spots often fade over time, although they may not disappear completely.

Preventive Care

Part of a whole-body approach

Peptide therapy relies on the minerals in your own saliva, which is one reason we pay attention to the bigger picture. Mouth breathing and dry mouth can reduce saliva and raise the risk of decay, so healthy breathing and saliva flow support your results. That connects peptide therapy to the rest of our care, from airway and sleep health to gum care and salivary testing. Our goal is to manage your oral health before problems develop, rather than waiting to repair them.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

There’s no drilling and no needles. Most patients say it feels like part of a regular cleaning.

How long does it take?

Just a few minutes per tooth, and it can often be done during a routine visit.

Will my white spots disappear?

They often fade over time, but they may not disappear completely. Peptide therapy is a treatment for tooth health first, not a cosmetic treatment.

How will I know it worked?

At follow-up visits, we check that the spot is stable or improving. Changes aren’t always visible on X-rays right away.

Can it be used during braces or aligner treatment?

Yes. It can be applied around brackets and attachments.

Do I still need to brush, floss and use fluoride?

Yes. Daily care helps prevent new spots, while peptide therapy treats early spots that have already formed.

Is it covered by insurance?

Coverage varies by plan. Please call our office, and our team will walk you through your options.
